Aari

Aari

Aari & Zardozi are the main embroidered craft of the subcontinent of India. It is similar to french Tambour embroidery except that the needle is a little different & the embroidery is done on the right side unlike tambour which is done on the reverse & ideally on sheer fabric. It is fundamentally a very small chain stitch, where the movement creates loops and repeats itself.

It takes an artisan (karigar) many years & long hours to master all the nuances.
Zardozi in comparison to Aari is easier but again a lot of practice is required to learn various techniques as well as using different materials like mirror, stones, beads, pipes, sequins, gota, mukaish, etc.
Fine needles are used to create the shading effect.
